Important Dates Associated With the Taj Mahal

May 11, 2026 0 comment

The Taj Mahal stands as one of the world’s most famous monuments and a lasting symbol of love. Its rich history includes several important events that shaped its legacy. Here are the key dates associated with this architectural masterpiece.

1612 – Shah Jahan Marries Mumtaz Mahal

In 1612, Prince Khurram, who later became Shah Jahan, married Arjumand Banu Begum, known as Mumtaz Mahal. Their strong relationship later inspired the creation of the Taj Mahal.

1631 – Mumtaz Mahal Dies

Mumtaz Mahal died in 1631 while giving birth to her 14th child. Her death deeply affected Shah Jahan, who wanted to honor her memory with a grand monument.

1632 – Construction Begins

Shah Jahan started the construction of the Taj Mahal in 1632 in Agra along the Yamuna River. Skilled artisans, architects, and craftsmen from different regions worked on the project.

1648 – Main Mausoleum Completed

Workers completed the central marble mausoleum in 1648. The structure quickly became one of the greatest examples of Mughal architecture.

1653 – Full Complex Finished

The entire Taj Mahal complex, including the gardens, mosque, guest house, and entrance gates, reached completion around 1653. The project took nearly 22 years to finish.

1658 – Aurangzeb Takes Power

In 1658, Aurangzeb removed Shah Jahan from power and confined him in Agra Fort. From there, Shah Jahan could still see the Taj Mahal from a distance.

1666 – Shah Jahan’s Burial

After Shah Jahan died in 1666, his family placed his tomb beside Mumtaz Mahal inside the Taj Mahal. Their resting place remains one of the monument’s most visited areas.

1983 – UNESCO Recognition

UNESCO added the Taj Mahal to its World Heritage List in 1983 because of its cultural and architectural importance. This recognition increased its global popularity.

Today – A Global Tourist Attraction

Today, millions of travelers visit the Taj Mahal every year to admire its beauty and learn about its history. The monument continues to attract visitors from around the world.
